| The rose is a powerful symbol of love and beauty. The ancient Greeks and Romans associated the rose with their goddess of love; and, since then, this flower's image has flourished throughout literature and poetry. Brahma and Vishnu – the Hindu creator and protector – both believed a rose's beauty to surpass even that of the lotus. So prized were roses by the 17th-century European aristocracy that they were accepted as payment for debt.
