Earth Connections
Nature is the theatre where our physical being and spiritual realm intersect.
--Dawn, 1997
From the beginning of human existence, marking the passing of time has been a part of all human culture; in fact the very survival of our species depended upon it. Ritually celebrating specific celestially auspicious occasions has always been a part of every culture. People kept track of these events and celebrated them in order to live in tune with their natural surroundings. It has only been during the past hundred years or so that humankind has begun to divorce itself from consciously interacting with Nature on a visceral, sensual and spiritual level. The results can be seen in our degrading environment and the vacuous, withering spirit of the human soul.
As the industrial era supplanted agriculture then gave way to our present-day technological age, our overt association with Nature (providing food and shelter) became moot. Erroneously we believed we could disassociate ourselves spiritually and emotionally as well. In my opinion this can not be done, not without the loss of an essential part of our humanity. For anyone not quite satisfied with their life, perhaps feeling a sort of emptiness deep within, I suspect happiness and fulfillment can be found by reconnecting with Nature as it is the umbilical cord to the cosmos, the church of energetic connection to the web of all Oneness.
A sure path to reuniting with this Oneness is assuming an active awareness with Nature, creating an intimate association with the elements, and becoming integral partners with the forces of the earth and heavens. An important conduit to this awareness is to celebrate--as humankind has done for thousands of generations--the cycles of Nature, the changing of the seasons, the stages of the moon, the sunrise and sunset.
Though most modern North Americans live such harried lives, with a constant barrage of noise separating us from the quietude of our souls, it is imperative for the environment AND our emotional and spiritual well being that we make time to align with the Earth. Most of the holidays that we now commemorate are merely shells of ancient, Nature-based celebrations. Although they have been modernized, commercialized and emptied of much spiritual or emotional meaning, it is relatively easy to reinvigorate these holidays with passion and the magic of the cosmos by refining your current celebratory activities a bit.
My intent with Earth Connections is to inspire you to invite Mother Earth fully into your life, to offer you a way to reconnect with Nature, and to help you find fulfillment in recognizing--through ritual--your Oneness with the Universe. Earth Connections provides insight to how you might celebrate in a fun, loving and enriching manner the traditional and modern holidays that represent the turning of the celestial wheel.
Namaste
