It was balmy, lovely day. Winter has given way to spring if you look deeply enough at the land and within your own soul.
It came to pass that Bob decided to leave for the coast a day early to get a chance at a swell sure to be making land this afternoon. Do I care that today is Valentine’s Day, or that I didn’t get much warning? Not really. I’d already prepared for the possibility of his leaving on Friday so one day doesn’t make that much difference. Yes, I’m sentimental for romance and love but, really, can’t we make any day we choose to be a romantic, be-my-love kind of day. I don’t need to honor a Catholic Saint or pay homage to Hallmark and over consumption.
So Bob drove off into the sunset, ocean bound, and I stayed in Bend. And the card Bob made for me was more than enough recognition of our love. He stayed up until midnight last night working on it and emailed it to me first thing this morning. I never even got a chance to think about what I might get for him. Now he is gone so I’m off the hook.
