Left Durban Sunday morning and headed north. Surf wasn’t too good then the wind came up strong south.

Went for a swim at a beach near Shaka’s Rock and D did some sunbathing.

Stocked up on food and filled the tank and drove to Mtubatuba. Were planning to drive to St. Lucia but it got dark. Spent the night at a nice backpackers lodge and watched SA Idol on tv.

Monday morn headed up to Sodwana Bay – supposed to be good diving and snorkeling. Snorkeling didn’t look good and the wind was too strong so we bagged that and decided to head for Ponta Do Ouro just over the border in Mozambique, only 2 hours away.

Border xing was easy. The pavement ended at the border and it was all sand tracks. We were glad for the opportunity to use our 4wd. The countryside was beautiful rolling hills of savanah down to the beach.

Made it to Ponta before dark and looked around at lodging options. Some places right on the beach at the point but all owned by diving outfitters so pretty overpriced.

We took the second-cheapest option which was quite rustic but doable, but way overpriced. 3rd world accommodations at 1st world prices. In any other 3rd world country I’ve been to it would have been a 20 dollar room, max. But this place was 25 per person. We were so disappointed and disgusted that we got up in the morning and drove back across the border to SA.

Headed down to Kosi bay and checked in to the KOSI bay Lodge. I think they have a website. Nice place and reasonably priced. We’ll probably stay here for a couple days.
