We were disappointed with the quality and cleanliness of our room last night, and since arguing withmanagement to comp us the room or at least provide a discount failed, we decided we had to stick around for the breakfast that was included with the B&B price in order to get our money’s worth. I think the term “pennywise, pound foolish” might applyhere (though I don’t really know what the term means) because when wegot back to Addo National Parkit was8:30 AM instead of right at 7 as planned. Because of the delay we missed seeing an African Lion munching on a huge Kudu bull that it had killed during the night. We saw on the map at park headquarters that a lion had been spotted by earlybirdpark visitors at a nearby watering hole so we rushed right to it. However, stage two of the cycle of life (death) was almost finished already…a couple of Black Backed Jackals were finishing off what the lion had left and crows and other scavenger birds were waiting patiently for stage three, and their turn. We missed the lion by about an hour. It seems it was eating breakfast at the same time we were.
Still, great elephant experiences came our way throughout the day and we didn’t leave the park and head back to Jeffrey’s Bay until late afternoon, enough time though for Bob to get in a bit of twilightsurfing. We looked around for some sort of lodging that would offer a discount for a weekly rate but apparently this isn’t an option in South Africa, or at least not J-Bay. We settled back at Greystone Inn, at least for one night. Bob is predicting a solid week of good swell so we plan to stick around until the weekend.
I’m putting up wildlife and surf photos later today. Check ’em out!
